ABOUT THE POSITION: We are seeking patient, caring, and fun-loving instructors to guide children aged five to ten in the Summer at HPA Ka Makani Keiki Camp (June 5-July 28). Working collaboratively with the Director of Ka Makani Keiki Camp Instructors will create an environment conducive to exploration and personal growth that motivates students to develop skills, attitudes, and knowledge needed to provide for continued discovery and growth through summer activities. All job duties at the school are expected to be performed in support of HPA's mission, in pursuit of our vision, and grounded in our core values of Integrity, Respect, Pursuit of Excellence and Wonder. Responsibilities Include: Plan and prepare activities according to the age and development of the students in the Summer program. Maintain daily routines while being open and flexible during collaboration with other staff members in Ka Makani Keiki Camp. Prepare materials as guided by the Director of Summer at HPA Ka Makani Keiki Camp. Participate in all activities as necessary. Maintain a learning environment where children can explore, create, and socialize safely. Provide tactful, caring, empathetic treatment toward all students. Demonstrate the ability to communicate clearly with students and engage them in activities. Respond to students' questions and create meaningful conversations with students. Be attentive to instruction to support students during independent or small group work. Demonstrate positive communication with parents. Maintain complete confidentiality in regard to all student learning and behavior. Establish and maintain a positive relationship with all Ka Makani Keiki Camp members and keep an open line of communication regarding any questions or concerns regarding students. Be aware of all communication with parents and other constituents. Be on time and on task (monitor the use of iPhones during classroom time - emergencies only) during scheduled class times. The typical workday hours are 7:30AM to 4:30PM, Monday through Friday. These one-week camps run June 5-July 28. Preference will be given to candidates who can work the entire session, however applicants who may not be able to work one of the weeks are still encouraged to apply. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS Be at least 21 years of age. Some post-secondary education. Ability to perform each essential job function satisfactorily. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships and communicate effectively with students, colleagues, and parents, as needed. Ability to use computers for classroom instruction and record keeping. Experience working with children in either an elementary school or another educational environment. Ability to successfully completed HPA training for 14-passenger bus driving, Lifeguard, First Aid/CPR, and Personal Boundaries. PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: Prior experience teaching and managing young children. Some familiarity with Hawaii or Hawaii Island.
