Professional Writing Tutor Learning Center (Student Affairs) Tsaile Campus Duty Schedule: Monday through Friday, 8:00AM to 5:00PM with evening or weekend hours may be required. Summary/Objective of Position: The Professional Writing Tutors are responsible for the holistic approaches & developments of academic writing, organization, higher ordered and critical thinking, argument, and coherence. The tutors will provide tutoring to ALL students individually and in small groups across all majors and are familiar with different writing styles and requirements. The tutors must demonstrate excellent writing and reading abilities, analytical skills, as well as training and experience in education principles and its uses, especially to English Language Learners. This includes, but not limited to, sentence and paragraph structures, grammar rules, argument logic, critical analysis, citation formatting, and forms of academic and professional writing. Tutors will provide tutorial support services for ALL students including students with disabilities through in-person, ZOOM classes and online learning platforms. TUTORING AND COACHING -Assist with on-boarding and orientation for ALL students, including access to the DC Portal, the Learning Center platform, and access to the Blackboard, and IT account access, -Meet with students individually and in small groups to help students with their writing processes, -use guided questions to assist students to think critically, further helping students understand how to improve their writing skills, -Guide students through the writing processes - prewriting includes brainstorming & outlining, drafting, revising, proofreading, and editing,-Assist students with reviewing and understanding writing assignments, learn to organize thoughts beginning with a topic,-Research and develop writing and reading aids, compile resources to share with students, -Work with all English Faculty members in ENG 101 and 102 to understand the writing assignments for each course. STUDENT SUPPORT - Be recognizant of FERPA when looking up student information using ConexED, EX/J1, etc. - Plan and host writing workshops on elements of writing via in-person and/or online using social media. - Become familiar with campus resources, i.e Library for research platforms; compile a research based - based resources to share with students to develop their writing needs. - Provide a supported learning environment for ALL students from multicultural and diverse backgrounds including students with disabilities. - Assist with the day-today program operations at the Learning Center. CAMPUS NETWORKS - Collaborate with faculty and support staff to identify needs for interventions, i.e. tutoring to ensure students' academic success with writing and research assignments; and -Collaborate and maintain dialogue with newly created Office of the Writing Program for guidance, support, and professional development; and - Promote the Learning Center's tutoring program at college sponsored activities; and - Collaborate and coordinate workshops with Student Affairs programs to ensure academic successes leading to retention and graduations. - Recommend staying current with Higher Education on national trends and best practices for Professional Writing Tutors. DATA AND MONTHLY REPORTING - Maintain a caseload of students seeking tutoring with writing assignments; and - Provide feedback to referring sources re: attendance and progress with writing needs; and - Complete and submit monthly tutoring logs in a timely manner; and - Complete and submit monthly workshops and attendance reports. QUALIFICATIONS Education & Experience Minimum: At least one-year experience in teaching or tutoring. Reading and writing levels ranging from basic English to College level courses in English; and Associate Degree in English, Writing, and/or related field preferred. Preferred: Two or more years' experience in teaching or tutoring reading and writing levels ranging from basic English to College level courses in English; and Bachelor's degree in English, or related field preferred. Knowledge: Knowledgeable of basic English to College level subjects in English; and Knowledgeable of the writing processes of essay and research writings; and Knowledgeable of the APA, MLA, and other writing formats; and Knowledgeable of planning/hosting workshops including manipulatives; and Knowledgeable of current laws and best practices related to FERPA, HIPAA, ADA, and other applicable regulations: and Knowledgeable of college department policies and procedures, and practices with the ability to answer work related questions; and Familiarity with general office equipment, such as a copier, fax and scanner. Skills: Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suites programs (Word, Excel, Outlook, etc.), tools for virtual meetings platforms and student information systems; and Demonstrated problem-solving skills and ability to adapt to new conditions and assignments; and Demonstrated high level discretion and sound judgment with confidential information; and Must be responsible, reliable and punctual to deliver quality tutorial services with a positive attitude. Abilities: Demonstrate the college's values to Taa ho aji teego, Ahil na'anish, il idlii, and il ee hozin Demonstrate ability to build strong student relations with a diverse student population including students with disabilities, Demonstrate ability to plan/host workshops with hands-on activities via in-person, Zoom, and/or online learning for delivery. Demonstrated understanding of the role of Professional Writing Tutor in providing guidance and support to enhance students' learni ng and development. Demonstrate the ability to speak and understand the Navajo Language for delivering tutorial guidance in both English and Navajo for comprehension and understanding. Physical Requirements, Work Environment & Travel: Must be able to lift, pull/push and carry up to 25 pounds. Must be able to work flexible hours in evening and weekends during the semester. Must be able to travel to other Dine College sites to provide tutorial services. Other Requirement(s): Possess a valid state issued Driver's License. Complete Highway Safety training to operate government vehicles. Attend/complete the First Aid & CPR training. Ability to speak and understand the Navajo language is a plus, but not necessary.
